I-BEAM IS UNVEILED

What an exciting day for Trinity Strand Trail! Our press conference with Mayor Tom Leppert and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano (also the Councilmember for our district) showcased a major milestone for our project…the completion of Turtle Creek Plaza. After years of hard work, not to mention the dedication and determination of many special friends, supporters and contributors, we were able to celebrate this great accomplishment.

There are many features that make Turtle Creek Plaza special. We have incorporated two informational kiosks into the plaza, one with a map of the trail and the other with the history of the project. In addition, we have commemorative engraved bricks placed throughout the surface of the plaza. Most importantly, we have installed a 14’ 7” I-beam representing the height of the Trinity River during the 1908 flood.

The design of Turtle Creek Plaza, including the bright blue sculpture and several additional unique elements, mirrors the look and style of other environmental art in the Design District, where the plaza is located. These design elements also give Turtle Creek Plaza a special charm and aesthetic appeal.

Thank you to the many supporters and friends of the Trinity Strand Trail. With your help, we are now even closer to making the vision of Trinity Strand Trail a reality.

I think many people who visit the main Trinity Stand Trail site might find it helpful if there were some kind of time estimate for when various phases of the trail might be completed.

I work on Monitor Street near the “Old Meanders,” and I would like to know if it will be months or years until the trail comes through. Should I expect it in 2011? 2015? I couldn’t really find that information on the Wikipedia page, the site, or the blog.

Even vague time estimates would be helpful, with a disclaimer that they can change.

That is a great point and thank you for the suggestion! As you can imagine, we worry about posting dates due to changes in schedules. The Trinity Strand Trail Turtle Creek Plaza should have been completed in 6 weeks but due to the several months of rainfall, construction was seriously delayed! We hope to begin construction on almost two miles of trail (leading from Turtle Creek Plaza to Farrington) in late fall 2010. We imagine construction will take at least a year.

At this time, we do not have a start date for the Trinity Strand Trail/Katy Trail Connection section nor the Medical District section but please be patient…we hope to have those dates by the end of the year. Thank you so much for your interest!!
