Trinity Strand Trail Construction Contract Approved by Park and Recreation Board

We just finished the Dallas Park and Recreation Board Meeting and the contract was awarded for Phase 1 of the Trinity Strand Trail. FINALLY!! We now go to city council on February 8 for approval. One down and one to go!

This contract includes construction for the concrete portion of trail along the river channel between Market Center and Farrington (almost two miles). Each piece of property along this channel has been generously donated by landowners and we hope to start construction by late spring.

Like most trail groups, we rely on the support of our community to continue our progress. There are many ways to assist our project. Get ready for the 2011 Dallas Jingle Bell Run benefiting Trinity Strand Trail and Mavericks Foundation on December 21^st!! The Hilton Anatole will host the event and we will follow the race with fun, food and festivities! The 1 mile fun run will begin at 6:30pm and the 5K race will start at 7pm. Online registration will be available in September at www.dallasjinglebellrun.com . Get your bells ready!

Dallas will go outside.

“Along with the opening of the standing wave, construction on the 600-acre Texas Horse Park will also begin. Located just half a mile from the Trinity River Audubon Center, the horse park will host competitions, offer therapeutic riding programs, and provide miles of trails. For those who prefer to travel on foot or bike versus animal, the Trinity Strand Trail will be for you. When completed, the trail will be 7.8 miles long and will connect from the Katy Trail down to the Audubon Center. Construction will begin this year on 2 miles of path following the old Trinity River. Plans for a separate trail for bikers and pedestrians are in the works, but the trail will start off as just one shared lane. “Everyone’s welcome that’s not motorized on our trail,” says Shelly White, executive director of the Trinity Strand Trail. Two trail heads already exist for the Trinity Strand Trail, and the first 2 miles are funded, but White is looking for more money to complete her vision.”

The date has been set for the 2010 Dallas Jingle Bell Run benefiting Trinity Strand Trail and Mavericks Foundation. Mark your calendars now for December 22^nd!! The Hilton Anatole will host the event and, just like last year, we will follow the race with fun, food and festivities! (Hey, it may be four months away but in this 100 degree heat, isn’t it nice to think about some cooler weather??)

The 1 mile fun run will begin at 6:30pm and the 5K race will start at 7pm. We are always looking for eager volunteers and sponsors. If you have an interest in either, please contact Shelly White at shellywhite@trinitystrand.org.

TURTLE CREEK PLAZA COMPLETED!

I-BEAM IS UNVEILED

What an exciting day for Trinity Strand Trail! Our press conference with Mayor Tom Leppert and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano (also the Councilmember for our district) showcased a major milestone for our project…the completion of Turtle Creek Plaza. After years of hard work, not to mention the dedication and determination of many special friends, supporters and contributors, we were able to celebrate this great accomplishment.

There are many features that make Turtle Creek Plaza special. We have incorporated two informational kiosks into the plaza, one with a map of the trail and the other with the history of the project. In addition, we have commemorative engraved bricks placed throughout the surface of the plaza. Most importantly, we have installed a 14’ 7” I-beam representing the height of the Trinity River during the 1908 flood.

The design of Turtle Creek Plaza, including the bright blue sculpture and several additional unique elements, mirrors the look and style of other environmental art in the Design District, where the plaza is located. These design elements also give Turtle Creek Plaza a special charm and aesthetic appeal.

Thank you to the many supporters and friends of the Trinity Strand Trail. With your help, we are now even closer to making the vision of Trinity Strand Trail a reality.
